Community Outreach May 1st on Rize proposal (21-storey tower), 235 & 275 Kingway and more

Place: Mount Pleasant Community Centre (1 Kingsway, Multipurpose Room 3, 2nd floor)

We will be discussing the updated Rize tower proposal along with two other development proposals at 235 and 275 Kingsway. A portion of the meeting will also look at priorities for park space–off leash areas, outdoor pools and Park Board’s plan for another skateboard facility. Finally, we’ll have the latest updates on the Biltmore social housing facility.

A number of details about the Rize tower proposal were not mentioned at the recent Open House on April 14th. The latest incarnation of the Rize is now 21 storeys high with 258 residential condo units and with no additional benefit going back to the community. The developers have also removed the highly-touted neighbourhood food co-op and increased the number of parking spaces from 320 to 399.

Feedback sent before May 5th to the City regarding this project may be included in a report for a hearing that will take place on June 30th before the Development Permit Board at City Hall, 453 W 12th (Town Hall meeting room, first floor). This project still must go back to City Council for final approval, as the rezoning has never been enacted into law and the plan has now changed significantly from the one approved in 2012. The next stage in the process is the Development Permit Board (DPB) hearing on June 30th. Members of the public can speak at this meeting for up to 5 minutes. The proposal for a 6-storey development at 235 Kingsway will also be reviewed by the DPB on June 30th. We will provide additional information about this upcoming meeting.
